Wave Room is a meditation on how humans cope when the social order is threatened by cataclysmic events. Lining the walls of the space were digitally collaged, printed images of ancient Roman towns destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Layered on top are video projections of a storm surge from a global warming amplified hurricane. The soundtrack is a layered, reversed and filtered a leitmotif from Gotterdammerung by Richard Wagner, sung by the Rhinemaidens. Written in 1876 as the final installment of the Ring Cycle, Gotterdammerung evinces a combination apocalyptic doom and ethno-nationalistic nostalgia that resonates with our current moment.
